Florida Local-Owned Butcher Shops & Meat Markets

Did you know that there is a National Barbecue month (it’s in May)? I admit that I did not, but that’s because the weather most of the year in Florida is fantastic for cookouts  — but we can’t always be the belle of the ball. So, for the sake of American tradition, let’s say barbecue season is right now during summer. And for the sake of American tradition, why not try buying your next steak, chop or chicken from a bona fide neighborhood butcher shop or meat market?

No yard? No problem.

Are you a condo or apartment dweller with iffy access to a community grill? Try a cast iron grill pan. I have one, and I won’t lie to you and say it’s just as good as a grill, but it can definitely handle a serious steak like a champ.

Let’s get local.

I wish neighborhood markets were the norm, not a novelty. You may have to drive a little farther to find a family-owned butcher shop or meat market. On the plus side, the service and quality you’ll receive are usually worth the extra effort. And there’s the feel-good-factor of supporting a local-owned Florida business.

And now, the listicle …

Not sure where to find these neighborhood shops? I’ve done the work for you! Here’s a list of locally loved butcher shops and meat markets from DeLand to Punta Gorda that are family-owned and operated. I’ve also included a couple of local farms that have retail shops onsite.

  • Katja says:

I’m looking for a place near Orlando where you can buy pork loin with the skin on it. Anybody who can help me?

    • Laura Knight says:

Hi Katja. My suggestion is to try calling a couple of local butchers to see if they can provide this cut for you. I would start with Hopkins Meat Packing in Sanford and Silva’s Brazilian Butchery (listed above). You can also try asking for a "porchetta" cut, which is the loin wrapped and tied with a separate piece of pork belly. Here is a blog post about how to make that from HonestlyYum.com (copy & paste this link) >> http://honestlyyum.com/7841/porchetta/

      Hope that helps!
